AI Texturing in 5 Minutes — Free Tool That Beats Paid Alternatives

I tested every AI texturing tool out there. Modddif is free, fast, and produces better results than paid alternatives. Here's the full workflow.

I've tested a lot of AI texturing tools — paid ones like Hunyuan 2D Studio, various retexturing features, you name it. None of them came close to what I achieved with Modddif.

And here's the kicker: it's completely free. Yes, free. The best AI texturing tool I've found, and it costs nothing. Use it while you can.

Important: Modddif doesn't create 3D models — it's a refinement tool. You bring your model (from Hunyuan, Tripo, etc.) and Modddif helps you create production-quality textures.

The Transformation

Here's what we're going to achieve — taking a basic AI-generated model with a mediocre texture and turning it into something that looks like it belongs in a AAA game. All in under 10 minutes.

Starting Point: The Problem with AI Textures

I created this model in Hunyuan 3D Studio and used their retopology tool (which is actually fantastic for mesh cleanup). But the texture? Let's just say it's... not great.

The texture looks... bad. We can do much better

This is a common problem. Even the best 3D AI tools (Tripo, Hunyuan, YVO3D) produce textures that are good enough but rarely production-ready. That's where Modddif comes in.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Import Your Model

Export your model as FBX from whatever tool you used (Hunyuan, Tripo, Blender, etc.). Then head to Modddif and create a new project.

The import dialog pops up right away — just drag and drop your FBX file. Modddif handles the rest.

2

Enter Texture Mode

Modddif has many tools, but we're here for texturing. Click on the Texture button in the top toolbar to enter texture mode.

Generate Base Texture with Multiview

This is where the magic starts. Go to the Multiview tab in the Generate panel.

  1. Select all 8 camera views (the colorful model thumbnails)
  2. Add your reference image — this guides the AI on what style you want
  3. Hit Generate

Now sit back and watch. Modddif will go view by view, projecting and baking textures onto your model. It takes about 2 minutes and it's honestly mesmerizing to watch.

4

Fill Missing Areas

After multiview generation, some areas might be black or have missing texture (parts not visible from any camera angle).

Click the "Fill missing area" button in the Layers panel. This fills those gaps with approximate texture. Already looking way better than our starting point!

Time Check

At this point, we're about 3 minutes in. The base texture is already better than what most AI tools produce. But we're just getting started.

Refine with Inpainting — The Secret Sauce

Now we switch to Single mode for precision work. This is where Modddif really shines.

  1. Add a close-up reference image of the area you want to improve (like a face)
  2. Click + (Add layer) in the Layers panel on the right
  3. Use the mask brush at the bottom to paint over the area you want to regenerate
  4. Hit Generate image
  5. Use the inpainting tool to paint the new texture onto your model

Pro Tip: Image Variations

Don't have multiple reference images? No problem! Click the three dots on any reference image and select "Create variation". Modddif will generate alternatives right there — no need to go back to Midjourney or Nano-banana, result is same good.

6

Repeat for Other Areas

The beauty of this workflow is you can target any part of the model. Rotate to a different view, add a new layer, mask the area, and generate.

For hair, I rotated to a side view, masked the hair area, and added the prompt "detailed hairs". The result? Incredibly detailed strands that look hand-painted.

7

Export Your Masterpiece

When you're happy with the result, export is dead simple. Click on your project name and select Export.

You get GLB, OBJ, and STL options — all free. No watermarks, no limitations.

The Final Result

Here's the finished model after about 10 minutes of work. Compare this to where we started — it's not even close. This looks like something from a modern game, not a quick AI generation.

Why Modddif is a Game-Changer

It's Free

Seriously. Full features, no watermarks, free export. This won't last forever — use it now.

Control + AI

Not fully automatic — you guide where AI focuses. This hybrid approach gets way better results.

Fast

5-10 minutes for production-quality results. Compare that to hours of manual texturing.

More Than Textures

Modddif also does geometry refinement, part splitting, and adding surface details. It's a full toolkit.

Final Thoughts

If you're working with AI-generated 3D models and want actually good textures, Modddif is currently the best tool I've found. The fact that it's free is just a bonus.

The semi-automatic approach (you paint areas, AI generates) gives you way more control than fully automatic tools while still being incredibly fast. It's the best of both worlds.

Whether you're new to 3D or a seasoned pro looking to speed up your workflow, it's worth checking out. I've been using it for my own projects and it's become a regular part of my texturing workflow.
